The highlight of the Flemish cycling calendar, the Ronde de Vlaanderen, takes place this Sunday the 4th of April. Cobblestones, climbs and nasty weather, so common in the Flanders region of Belgium, are what make this race such a challenge.
Sunday’s race is the second leg of the UCI Women’s World Cup series and takes the ladies peloton over the bumpy bergs of Flanders. The 119.3km course starts in Oudenaarde and loops east toward the finish in Ninove.
Favourites for this year’s race include last year’s winner, Ina Teutenberg (HTC Columbia), local cycling hero, Grace Verbeke (Lotto Ladies team) and Marianne Vos (Dutch National team). Vos will be particularly hungry for the win, as she is currently holding the World Cup leaders jersey and this is one of the few major races she has never won.
This is one of the best supported women’s cycling events, as it takes place just before the men’s race. Expect crowds of passionate Flemish cycling fans lining up on the side lines cheering on their hero’s.
