My roller coaster ride 2010

The ups and downs of my fitness and form 2010

This is the time of the year when most competitive cyclists all around the world take stock of the year that has been and start planning for the year to come.

Looking back on 2010, I realise just what a roller coaster ride it has been.

With three injuries in one year it is no surprise that I experienced such ups and downs in my fitness and form. It just so happened that every time I was starting to come to good form, I would injure and lose all I had worked so hard to gain (this is clearly shown by the blue line in the graph above).

Although I never really managed to reach the form I would have liked this year, I feel it was an incredibly successful year as I learnt a lot. Cycling for Lotto Ladies team in Europe, I experienced racing at it’s toughest and best. I got to know the girls in the international peloton, this is very important to be able to achieve results.

With this experience in the bank, I look forward to 2011. I can now use all the lessons I have learnt to achieve even bigger and better goals for 2011. With the ultimate goal of representing South Africa at the 2012 Olympics.

My goal for this year was to learn and grow, to get to know myself better as a cyclist. I want to know what I am doing and why I am doing it, so that in the years to come, I can come back and experience the view from the top of the podium!
